The FREE three-week Caregiver’s Training Series is for caregivers, family members, and anyone else who is interested in learning more about dementia and driving. “The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., produced this course to help family members decide when and how individuals with dementia should limit or stop driving. The goal is to prolong independence while protecting the safety of drivers with dementia.”

This staff training program, presented in partnership with the Illinois Dept. of Public Health, is primarily for staff of skilled nursing and assisted living facilities and meets the requirements for initial Alzheimer's care training mandated by the State of Illinois. The $125 fee includes continental breakfast, a scripted training manual and PowerPoint slides. CEUs are available for Activity Directors, Counselors, Nursing Home Administrators, OTs, PTs, RNs, and Social Workers for an additional $10.

The Lewy Body Dementia Association’s (LBDA) new support group facilitator teleconference training is open to anyone who wants to start a support group in their area for families who have a loved one with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). This teleconference is also open to anyone who currently facilitates a support group which includes families who have a loved one with LBD, and who would like their support group to be part of the LBDA support group network. To attend this teleconference, you must pre-register. The call-in number, password, and agenda will then be e-mailed to you. More information about Lewy Body Dementia can be found at www.lbda.org. The Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) will be hosting a two-day global conference for research scientists to engage in discussion and cross fertilization of ideas focusing on Alzheimer’s drug discovery research. The conference objectives are to: (1) discuss scientific progress on drug discovery programs aimed at treating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; and (2) increase networking opportunities for scientists to share information and resources;. The Alzheimer’s Association, New York City Chapter is now recruiting walkers, supporters and volunteers for its annual fundraiser, Memory Walk 2010. This year’s two mile walk will take place in scenic Riverside Park (West 97th Street & Riverside Drive) on the morning of Sunday, October 24 and will be emceed by Bill Ritter of WABC-TV and Alice Stockton-Rossini of 1010 WINS. The Walk--along with an earlier Memory Walk in Brooklyn this fall--is expected to raise a combined total of $1.2 million.

12/14/2010 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM   Non-Alzheimer's Type Dementias: Diagnosis, Treatment and Care: Chicago, IL
This seminar will focus on dementias other than Alzheimer’s disease that affect as many as 30 percent of persons with dementia. These include vascular dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, Primary Progressive Aphasia, and other rare types. Symptoms, differential diagnosis, pathology, and treatment options will be discussed. The practical challenges of these disorders facing caregivers and how to best meet the care needs of those affected will be addressed. A panel of family caregivers will share their personal perspectives on living with loved ones affected by these dementias.
